Predicting bird‐window collisions with weather radar

چکیده
Up to 1 billion birds die annually in the U.S. from window collisions; most of these casualties represent migratory native species. Because this major mortality source likely contributes decline North American avifauna, mitigation tools are needed that accurately predict real-time collision risk, allowing hazards be minimized before fatalities occur. We assessed potential use weather surveillance radar, an emerging tool increasingly used study and bird migration, as early warning system reduce numbers bird-window collisions. Based on monitoring Oklahoma, USA, we show radar-derived migration variables associated with nightly Across entire night, collisions increased higher traffic rate (i.e. crossing a fixed line perpendicular direction), for specific periods within night were also related Synthesis applications. Our suggests radar can invaluable help refine efforts such reducing nighttime lighting emitted near buildings.

Wind observations with Doppler weather radar
Introduction Weather radars are commonly employed for detection and ranging of precipitation, but radars with Doppler capability can also provide detailed information on the wind associated with (severe) weather phenomena. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) operates two identical C-band (5.6 Ghz) Doppler weather radars. One radar is located in De Bilt and the other one is loc...
متن کاملThe Danish weather radar network
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) operates four cband radars for weather monitoring. Three of these radars are doppler and were purchased from Electronic Enterprise Corporation (EEC) in the last 2 – 4 years. The fourth radar is an older non-doppler radar manufactured by Ericsson of Sweden and is situated on the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. Geographical location of the radar sit...
متن کاملImproving Weather Radar Data Quality for Aviation Weather Needs*
A fundamental function of any aviation weather system is to provide accurate and timely weather information tailored to the specific air traffic situations for which a system is designed. Weather location and intensity are of prime importance to such systems. Knowledge of the weather provides “nowcasting” functionality in the terminal and en route air spaces. It also is used as input into aviat...
متن کاملPredicting Rainfall with Polarimetric Radar Data
We explore a set of polarimetric radar data and rain gauge readings collected in the Midwestern US over several months, while aiming to improve existing rainfall prediction techniques with various supervised learning algorithms.1 We explore preprocessing techniques and evaluate Linear Regression and Feedforward Neural Networks models of summarized data against the Marshall-Palmer baseline.
